Dynamics 365 Business Central Vs. Sage Intacct: Which is better for your business needs?

Updated: Jul 7, 2023

Dynamics 365 Business Central and Sage Intacct are both mid-market, accounting solutions that offer similar benefits and functionalities. Both solutions help business leaders automate and modernize their business processes to increase business efficiency and accelerate growth.

However, there are important distinctions between the two that can help you select the solution that will help your business reach its specific accounting and finance goals. Outlined below are some factors you should consider when deciding between Dynamics 365 Business Central or Sage Intacct.

Features

Both Dynamics 365 Business Central and Sage Intact can be customized to meet the needs of their audiences. Dynamics 365 Business Central is known for its ERP and reporting capabilities. Additionally, the solution includes numerous add-ons that enable businesses to see specific data and targeted results.

Sage Intacct is designed to provide businesses with accounting flexibility as they scale. This is done via the solution’s customization tools that can be used to edit data models, reports, and deployments, allowing users to clearly display the business’s detailed financial data.

Accounting

Sage Intacct is known for its excellent accounting capabilities due to its deep financial management capabilities. While the solution does have some operational features, these features are basic and limited in use. Users are provided with a detailed view of their accounting possibilities which can be customized to track specific numbers or data.

Dynamics 365 Business Central can accurately manage your business’s financial activities such as general ledger, accounts payable, fixed assets, and more. Dynamics 365 Business Central also can function as a type of CRM (Customer Relationship Management), showing your opportunities and contact information so you best know your customers.

Integrations

Because Business Central is a Microsoft product, it seamlessly integrates with other Microsoft solutions, enhancing the capabilities of Business Central. For example, Dynamics 365 Business Central can connect with Outlook, allowing users to send invoices directly in the app rather than having to send them in Business Central. Oftentimes, users connect Dynamics 365 Business Central with Power BI to have the additional reporting capabilities to easily visualize the gathered data.

While Sage Intacct is more expensive up front, it can connect with a wide variety of software solutions and can often provide deeper and more detailed insights into specific financial datasets. Sage Intacct has an open API that allows it to connect easily with those other solutions. Both Sage Intacct and Business Central prices can vary depending on the use case.

Reporting and Data Analytics

One of the biggest benefits of Sage Intacct is its reporting and data analytics capabilities. It provides deep insights into businesses’ financial data, allowing business leaders to identify and evaluate pain points which helps them to know where to adapt their budgets.

Business Central integrated with Power BI enables users to delve deep into all business data. With both solutions, users can build interactive, detailed dashboards and reports that provide an in-depth view of overall business performance, operations, revenue, and more.

Order and Inventory Management

Because Sage Intacct is more focused on accounting functionalities, it is limited in its ability to track orders and inventory. Additionally, it does not track product or sales order details.

Dynamics 365 Business Central excels in its ability to track all business processes and operations, including warehouse, financial, supply chain, customer interactions, and service data. The functionality helps businesses easily and efficiently track inventory and the entire product life cycle.

Security

Both of these ERP solutions are cloud-based, which offers more secure solutions than housing information on-premises. Sage Intacct offers high network, application, and system security to prevent outside attacks and unauthorized user access.

Dynamics 365 Business Central has comprehensive and rigid security controls in place, providing users with comprehensive protection from cyber threats. There are four levels of security within Dynamics 365 Business Central, which grants the right users the desired access levels. Microsoft also has a huge security technology suite, which ensures users extensive protection and backup security protocols in place to protect their system and its data.

Limitations

As with any cloud-based software, there are some limitations to both Sage Intacct and Business Central. Sage Intacct requires a higher learning curve as it is quite different from other accounting solutions. Oftentimes Sage Intacct users are limited in access of their customizable views and reports. Setting the right permissions can be confusing and time-consuming.

Dynamics 365 Business Central can also be quite the process when migrating to it from another system. It takes time, and some Microsoft Partner experts to ensure all the information is migrated correctly, and into the right locations within Business Central. Although it takes time to migrate data, Dynamics 365 Business Central is easier to operate. Both systems can be complicated at first but will be worth it when implemented and functioning properly with time.
